GtalkOnlineStatus - Use your own images.

# | posted: Friday, September 01, 2006 | updated: Monday, September 04, 2006 | comments: 11

The bot now has a way of using your own images.

To use them simply use the following URL

http://www.jonburrows.co.uk/gtalkstatus/www.domain.com_imagedir/encstring.jpg

simply change www.domain.com_imagedir to the URL that holds your images, just use _ instead of / in the URL as the bot changes all _'s to /'s

so for johndoe he would use http://www.jonburrows.co.uk/gtalkstatus/www.johndoe.com_gtalkimages/encstring.jpg and when someone looked at a page showing his status it will actually use the images from

www.johndoe.com/gtalkimages/status.jpg << see below for list of status images required.

Once your status is called from a webpage it will then locate your status and redirect it to the images that are located on your site.

The following are the minimum images you require for GTalk, other jabber server may use others.

available.jpg, unavailable.jpg, dnd.jpg, idle.jpg, away.jpg

If you find a request for another status simply create the required jpg and upload it to the directory

Cheers Jon

Thanks to [mEo] for the request to make the instructions clearer, and jakecigar for the URL idea.

Hello, I'am interested in having a text on my site that's only Available or Not available. And the ability to make my own link on the text. Is it possible to make such a script?

Jon commented on Tuesday, September 05, 2006

Hi Lasse, Yes this is possible. you need to write a script on that calls

http://jabsv5.jonburrows.co.uk/gtalkstatus/11/yourencstring.jpg

The response sent back will be a single text string with your status contained within it. You script then simply needs to use the response however you like, whether it be simply wrapping it in a url or creation of a custom image, like the view of perth as shown in the banner on my pages.

I wanna known about this.

Minty

If you add gtalkonlinestatus@googlemail.com to your client then send encstring to the bot, when you get the string back if you enter that into your browser it will then display the standard image showing your status. To change this image to one of your images simple change the number 1 from the gtalkstatus/1/ part to become the URL of your images thus gtalkstatus/www.minty.com_gtalkimages/urencstring.jpg now the link will redirect to your images.

Hey, I love this idea and thanks for offering it, however I'm having a problem with it.

Well two, the first is a custom image problem. See, even when I have "unavailable.jpg" in the folder with the rest of the images, when I'm offline it doesn't display the image, however, when I'm online or busy it works just fine. Is there supposed to be another name for "offline"?

And second I have a problem, on another account, with it simply not working. Whether I'm logged in, or logged out. I have it connected to "1" for the image folder too.

It might be worth a note that I added the bot with a "Google Talk: Conference Bot" though the probably happens when I use the Google Client too.

Anyway! Thanks again for offering the service! ^_^

I really DO NOT get it.

  1. Is this hack going to show a picture of my choice in my buddies' list when I am online?

  2. What do I do after I get the "ENCSTRING" from the bot? I don't think I have to put it in my status message. Neither would opening the link do any trick.

PLEASE elaborate. Even though I have a really high IQ and know much about computing, I do not understand this hack.

Jon commented on Friday, September 29, 2006

This bot will allow you to display your status on any webpage The url string you received after sending ENCSTRING is placed into a <img src="RETURNEDSTRING" /> and put into the webpage and it will then display the standard status image.

If you wish to use an image from your site you can do this by following the instruction above.

Hope this helps.
